Pollution Risk Analysis of Heavy Metals at Illegal Mining Sites at Atiwa East District, Ghana

This study aims at determining the level of pollution heavy metals (Cr, Cu and Hg) in soils illegal mining sites Atiwa East District Ghana. The concentrations Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Mercury (Hg) were determined using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). extent metal risk assessment was analyzed site. Thirty (30) soil samples collected from three (3) within district. average levels Cu, Cr, Hg 8.8, 6.75, 3.19 mgkg-1 respectively, all above WHO threshold. geo accumulation indices (Igeo) obtained 1.92, 3.8, 6.5 indicating moderately to extremely polluted sites. research has helped establish local Geochemical Baseline Concentrations (GBCs) area so that an appropriate remediation method could be employed.
